At least three civilians were killed in a car bomb attack carried out by the PKK terrorist organization’s Syrian offshoot, the YPG, according to Turkey’s Defense Ministry. The attack took place in the Afrin region, further injuring six civilians, including three children.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense stated, “The YPG/PKK terrorist organization continues with its ISIS/Daesh-like terror attacks.”
In an attempt to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents, Turkey launched the Olive Branch operation in 2018. Considered as one of the three successful counterterrorism operations of Turkey in the region, the others being Euphrates Shield and Peace Spring conducted in 2016 and 2019, respectively, the operation cleared the Afrin region from YPG/PKK terrorists.
The YPG/PKK remains operational in Syria’s adjacent Tal Rifaat and Manbij regions, often carrying out attacks in Jarablus, Azaz, Afrin, and al-Bab.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the European Union. In its campaign of terror for more than 40 years against Turkey, it has been responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.
