Taliban leader hosted by Iran as peace talks in Qatar reach stalemate

The Taliban's political leader was hosted by Iran to discuss the development of Afghan peace process and other matters.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif met with Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar on 31 January, in Tehran. According to the Taliban’s spokesman Mohammed Naeem, the meeting was conducted in a positive environment. Furthermore, the current situation of the Afghan peace process, the Doha agreement’s implementation, and the need for peace in the country and region were discussed, in the tweet shared by the spokesman.

On the Iranian side, Zarif is quoted to have said that an inclusive Afghan government, where ethnic groups and sects are represented, would be supported by Tehran. Additionally, he stated that the process should be established in direct relation with the constitution, institutions and basic laws.
