It was reported that the candidates listed by the UN were approved by participants at the peace talks held in Geneva, Switzerland. Approved candidates will prepare Libya for a national election to be held at the end of 2021.
There have been 75 participants comprised of regional and tribal figures, at UN-led peace talks in Geneva. They will pick 3 people for the presidential council post, from 24 candidates in the UN list released on Saturday.
In the approved list, there are Aguila Saleh, head of the Tobruk-based parliament, the GNA’s Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha, Defence Minister Saleh Namroush and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeg.
The transitional government will be responsible for observing preparations for the elections that are hoped to bring an end to decade-long chaos and conflict that caused deep rifts and economic collapse in Libya.
Many Libyans fear that competition for governmental posts could trigger new fighting, despite the progress made in UN-led peace talks. In Libya, there is a ceasefire which has been partially held since last October.
