President of Iraq, Barham Salih, and the President of Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), Nechirvan Barzani, are set to attend Iranian President-elect Ibrahim Raisi’s inauguration ceremony on Thursday.

“Iraqi President is planning a visit to Iran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Raisi,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson told Shafaq News. The visit is expected to be under the framework of bilateral relations, the spokesperson added.

There are no reports indicating Salih would meet with President-elect Raisi during his visit.

President Salih had recently announced Iraq was facilitating talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia. The talks between the two sides reportedly took place “more than once.”

Baghdad took on a more active diplomatic posture over consecutive governments, acting as a mediator between regional rivals.

The KRG’s Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Kwestan Mohamad, confirmed yesterday that Barzani would conduct an official visit to Tehran to attend Raisi’s inauguration ceremony. “A high-ranking delegation, headed by President Barzani from the regional government, will attend President-elect Raisi’s inauguration,” Mohamad said.
