Russia blames British banks for freezing billions of dollars belonging to Gaddafi and his family

The Russian Foreign Ministry accused several UK-based banks of illegally holding Libyan funds.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that British banks froze billions of dollars belonging to ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi and his family within the scope of the 1973 UN Security Council Resolution adopted on March 17, 2011. Speaking at a press conference she held, Zakharova stated that Gaddafi’s accounts remained unclear after he was killed.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zakharova further stated that the British government aims to transfer the money illegally held in banks to victims of IRA terrorist attacks financed by Libya.
