The Tunisia Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Yves Soteran, said that the cases and deaths were very high in the city of Kairouan, which has become the center of the epidemic in the country.
Soteran stated that, while there is a decrease in the number of cases and deaths caused by COVID-19 worldwide, there is a reverse situation in the African continent.
“Tunisia ranks highest in the Arab world and Africa in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths,” the WHO official said.
In Tunisia, the coastal country of North Africa, there is concern about a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the increase in the number of cases, the emergence of new variants, and the slow progress of vaccination.
The government implemented a series of measures yesterday in the face of this situation. In this context, the start time of a curfew, which was previously applied at 22.00-05.00 hours, has been moved to 20.00.
In addition, all meetings, organizations, and demonstrations were banned, while travel to areas at risk was restricted, public employees were directed to work from home, and some civil servants were given administrative between July 1-21.
According to the data of the Tunisian Ministry of Health, 14,843 people have died in the country so far in the COVID-19 epidemic, and the total number of cases has increased to 414,182. The Ministry announced the number of recovered as 352,180.
