Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi arrived in Brussels on Tuesday to “conduct a series of meetings and dialogues with the Belgian side to enhance the level of Iraqi-European cooperation.”
Al-Kadhimi, along with his delegation, will reportedly visit the European Union headquarters in Brussels.
The visit aims to “activate economic agreements between Iraq and the European Union countries.”
Kadhimi’s arrival comes on the heels of increased contact between Iraq and several European countries, including France, Britain, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
The visit follows the annual ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, which took place in Rome over the weekend.
Al-Kadhimi visited France, Britain, and Germany during his first European tour last October.
Earlier this month, Kadhimi received a phone call from his Belgian counterpart, Alexander de Croo, in which the Belgian Prime Minister invited Kadhimi to visit the country. Prime Minister Croo pledged his government’s support for the Iraqi government and its efforts to implement economic reform and achieve the rule of law during the call.
The details regarding Kadhimi’s itinerary during his trip remain undisclosed at the time.
