At least 5 people were killed and many have been injured in clashes in Benghazi, in the east of the country, on Saturday. According to local sources, clashes took place between the Al-Jawazi and Al-Awaqeer tribes. In the images, which were also reflected on social media, it was seen that many civilians remained in the conflict zone during the conflict.

The Al-Awaqeer tribe is seen as one of Khalifa Haftar’s most staunch supporters. Nonetheless, tensions between the Werfalli and the Al-Awaqeer tribe are alleged to have been behind the assassination of Mahmoud al-Werfalli in Benghazi, in March.

Security concerns have reached serious proportions in Benghazi, which is controlled by Khalifa Haftar and his militias. In the city, where many kidnappings, arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial killings and assassinations took place, local people have been migrating to different parts of Libya since 2014, due to security reasons.

In November 2020, Libyan female activist Henan Berasi was killed in the middle of the street one day after her video criticizing Saddam Haftar was released. People who were against Haftar were detained and subjected to arbitrary arrests.

It is possible to talk about the influence of certain tribal groups in Benghazi, where the security environment in the city is provided by militias with different ideologies.
