The Permanent Representative of Russia to International Organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov announced through a post on his Twitter account that the parties of nuclear talks will meet on Sunday. The formal meeting which will be held in Vienna, will determine the way ahead at the nuclear talks, he said.
Stressing that parties are close to reaching an agreement to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, Ulyanov added that it has not been finalized yet.
Iran and world powers have been negotiating in Vienna since April to determine the steps which could be taken by both Washington and Tehran to return their commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Completing five rounds, the negotiating parties launched the sixth round of talks a week before the presidential election in Iran. Due to disagreements on key issues and Iran going to the polls on June 18, the sixth round of talks had to be adjourned.
Sunday’s formal meeting comes after more than a week and is expected to adjourn once again without reaching an agreement.
On the other hand, it was reported that the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said that the talks should wait for the establishment of a new government in Iran, to continue. According to the report, Grossi said, “Everyone knows that, at this point, it is necessary to wait for the formation of a new government in Iran,” in his statement that he gave to the Italian newspaper Repubblica.
However, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister and head of the Iranian negotiating team in Vienna, Abbas Araqchi, reacted to the Western official’s remarks by saying that Grossi lacks information about the political system in Iran.
Stressing that the nuclear talks are among major foreign policy issues where decisions on this field are taken at the highest levels of the system, the Iranian diplomat said, “Reaching an agreement depends on meeting the key demands and resolving the fundamental concerns of the Islamic Republic… whenever parties reach such a point, an agreement will be reached, whether in this government or in the next government.”
