On Wednesday, former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad completed his registration for the upcoming presidential election which will be held in June. His nomination came on the second day of the registration process.
Rejected by the Guardian Council, Iran’s top vetting institution, for the 2017 election, the former president notified that he would not recognize the election or vote in the case he faces a disqualification decision by the council once again.
Speaking following the completion of the nomination procedures, Ahmadinejad described the situation that the country is going through as “sensitive” and “difficult.” Under these circumstances and the existing governance structure, making reforms is not possible, the former president added.
In his statement, Ahmadinejad said, “We must all prepare ourselves for major reforms and a big and extensive shake-up, and the process must be done according to the will of the people.”
The application of candidates would be undertaken into examination by the Guardian Council after the five-day registration process ends.
On the other hand, it was reported that an argument had erupted between Ahmadinejad’s supporters and the Interior Ministry’s staff members because the group, who wanted to accompany him, was not allowed to enter into the ministry building due to COVID-19 restrictions.
