Qatar’s state-run news agency, Qatar News Agency (QNA), reported on Thursday that Qatar’s attorney general issued an arrest warrant for Finance Minister Ali Shareef Al Emadi. According to state media, the decision came as part of an investigation carried by the Public Prosecution. Al Emadi is accused of misusing public funds and abusing power, the QNA added.

It was also indicated that the decision had been taken following the close examination of documents and reports on crimes related to the public sector.

Quoting from the office of the prosecutor general, QNA also reported that Finance Minister Al Emadi would be questioned as part of an investigation into the embezzlement of public funds and misuse of authority.

Further details have not been provided yet.

Ali Shareef Al Emadi was appointed as Finance Minister a day after the current Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, took power in June 2013. Prior to taking this post, Al Emadi served as chief executive of Qatar National Bank from 2007 to 2013.

Alongside his ministry position, El Emadi already stands as chairman of the QNA’s board and the president of the executive board of Qatar Airways. He also has a seat on the board of the Qatar Investment Authority.
