On Sunday, it was announced that Kosovo opened its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem. With this move, the country became the third one that has opened an embassy in the city after the United States and Guatemala. This came after the country pledged to allocate its embassy in Jerusalem when diplomatic relations had been established with Israel last year, as a result of US-backed negotiations. Regarding the establishment of the embassy, the Kosovo Foreign Ministry stated on Twitter that “the pledge given in the Oval Office today is finally fulfilled”. This latest move can be considered as part of Israeli efforts to normalize ties with Arab and Muslim countries through US sponsorship under former US President Donald Trump.
On the other hand, one of the members of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Wasel Abu Youssef, stated that Kosovo’s move is contrary to the UN resolutions and aims to weaken the Palestinian cause.
Any date regarding the formal inauguration ceremony of the embassy has not been announced yet.
Last week, the Czech Republic opened a diplomatic office in Jerusalem, causing condemnation from the Palestinians and Arab League.
