On Wednesday, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced that further humanitarian approach is needed in the conflict-hit Syria, to extend help to more people in need of support.
Communicating to journalists at the UN Headquarters in New York, on the 10th anniversary of the Syrian Civil War, Antonio Guterres indicated that Syria has collapsed off the front pages after a decade of conflict and “yet the situation remains a living nightmare.”
“Some 60% of Syrians are at risk of hunger this year. It is imperative that we continue to reach all Syrians in need of humanitarian assistance,” said Guterres. “More humanitarian access is needed.” he added.
He also called for intensified crossline and cross-border deliveries to be made essential, to reach a range of people in need ubiquitously.
The UN Secretary-General also promised that the international body will endure its efforts for a political settlement in line with Security Council Resolution 2254, mentioning the first step on that plan, which should be a concrete growth in the Constitutional Committee.
Syrian parties have the chance to determine a willingness to find common grounds, he said. “This is the best path that will lead to a solution which meets the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians.”
It is a procedure in which Syrian women and men must play their full share, he added. Syria has been pulled towards a civil war in early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime tumbled down on pro-democracy protesters.
According to UN estimates, millions of people have been executed and more than 10 million have been expatriated.
