On Wednesday, Yahya Sinwar, who is 59 years old, was re-elected as the President of the Palestinian group Hamas, located in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian source said.
The informant, who wished to speak on the condition of anonymity, stated to Anadolu Agency that the General Shura Council of Hamas in the Gaza Strip nominated al-Sinwar as its chief in the reserve for a second period.
A deep rivalry was omnipresent during the election between the two prominent Hamas officials in contention, al- Sinwar and Nizar Awadallah. The latter is another of the movement’s protuberant leaders in the Gaza Strip, said the source.
Hamas started its internal election procedure on February 18, 2021, which will be completed at the end of March.
Al-Sinwar was first elected as chief of Hamas in the Gaza Strip back in 2017.
