In a statement addressed to the Head of the Moroccan Government Saad Eddine El Othmani on Monday, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita called on all national ministries and government bodies to stop their interactions with the German Embassy in Rabat and other affiliated organizations in the country. The leaked statement, which dates from 1 March, reads that any derogation to this decision must first be approved by the Moroccan Foreign Ministry.
The statement concerned does not provide a reason for the suspension of relations with the German Embassy, which has resulted in widespread speculation as to why this decision was taken. Some suggest that the decision was taken after the German government reacted in a hostile manner to the Moroccan position on the Western Sahara issue, which manifested in a German call to the UN to convene an urgent meeting following Trump’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the region. The same source providing the news aforementioned indicated that a high-level summit on Libya was hosted in Berlin which did not include Morocco.
Another source from the country states that spies might be the reason for Morocco’s displeasement and subsequent decision.
