State media and social media report on clashes between Iranian riot police and security forces and protesters in dozens of locations amid ongoing demonstrations against the murder of Mahsa Amini while in police custody.
Amini, a 22-year-old Kurd from the Iranian city of Saqez, was detained by the morality police, who uphold the Islamic Republic’s rigorous clothing code, last month in Tehran for “unsuitable apparel.”
Her death has provoked Iran’s first significant public display of discontent since authorities put down demonstrations against an increase in fuel prices in 2019.
Videos shared on Twitter showed protesters grappling with police officers while demanding the overthrow of the religious system in Tehran, Tabriz, Karaj, Yazd, and many other Iranian cities, despite the rising death toll and harsh response by the government.
State television said that police shot tear gas at what it referred to as “rioters” in certain places to disperse them.
Social media videos from Iran showed demonstrators waving and setting fire to their veils as they chanted, “Woman, Life, Liberty.”
Death to the tyrant, a reference to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was chanted by demonstrators in Tabriz, according to videos posted on Twitter. riot police opened fire on protestors in the Kurdish cities of Sanandaj and Sardasht, as seen by videos sent to Twitter.
