Israel on Tuesday made public a top-secret document from 2002 that was used to support the 2007 attack of what it claimed to be a nuclear facility in Syria.
According to a military statement, on September 6, 2007, during a mission known as “Outside the Box,” Israeli airplanes attacked a Syrian nuclear facility in the Deir Ez-Zor region.
The Israeli military intelligence issued a warning in the covert paper that Syria was attempting to start developing a nuclear program.
According to the cover sheet of the classified document, “Recently it became known that covert initiatives previously unknown to us are being done [or at least were being conducted] within the framework of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission,” according to an Israeli newspaper.
The army also released images and videos of the bombing of the Syrian nuclear facility and images of the location both before and after the attack. The disclosure of the top-secret paper comes as Israel works nonstop to persuade Western nations, especially the US, to forgo concluding a nuclear agreement with Iran.
Iran disputes Israel’s accusation that it is attempting to develop a nuclear weapon and maintains that its nuclear program is intended only for peaceful applications. As part of a “maximum pressure campaign” against Tehran, former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018.
