On Sunday, Jordanian security personnel conducted operations in an area near the Syrian border to stem the supply of illicit drugs, according to the country’s official news agency.
The region to the northeast of Amman is the principal channel for the smuggling of Captagon pills from regime-controlled portions of Syria into Jordan and then into the interior of the Arabian Peninsula.
In May of last year, Jordanian officials stated that the Syrian regime forces and Iranian-backed militias were responsible for the smuggling.
A Jordanian police spokesperson was quoted by the official news agency as saying that “raid and investigation teams are continuing their work in the region as part of intensive search operations to apprehend drug and contraband offenders and establish the rule of law.”
The news agency reported the seizure of 23 vehicles, the same number of firearms, and an unidentified number of drugs.
During the operation, official photographs captured a column of armored gendarmes and force members standing next to a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Tehran should quit intervening in the region, according to King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Captagon, a cheaply produced amphetamine derivative, has become the drug of choice in many parts of the Middle East.
