The fall of additional sections of the damaged grain silos at the port of Beirut on Thursday coincided with the second anniversary of the explosion that caused the deaths of hundreds of people.
A correspondent from the Anadolu Agency at the scene confirmed that four-grain silos in the northern portion of the port had collapsed. The tremendous blast caused major sections of the silos, which had previously been damaged by a fire that had been burning for several weeks and was located close by, to collapse, which resulted in the surrounding areas being covered in a thick layer of dust.
Large portions of the silos were obliterated when an explosion occurred at the harbor on August 4, 2020, which also shook the entire capital city of Beirut.
More than two hundred people were killed, more than six thousand were injured, and more than fifty thousand homes were damaged. It is predicted that the total material damages will be somewhere near fifteen billion dollars.
Because of the fires that had occurred earlier in the month of July, the ministries of the environment and health issued a warning on the 25th of that month, stating that there was a potential for sections of the grain silos to collapse.
Every effort that was made to rescue the grain that was kept in certain pockets of the silos was unsuccessful due to the condition of those pockets, which puts the safety of any intervention operation in jeopardy.
