According to the army leadership, the Lebanese military has captured 64 persons attempting to sail from northern Lebanon to Europe.
The Lebanese, Syrians, and Palestinian migrants were all stopped and questioned on Tuesday, according to an army statement, except for one pregnant woman who was bleeding and was rushed to hospital.
Before their boat could set sail, the migrants were reportedly apprehended. They were apprehended near the Sheikh Znad region, just outside Tripoli’s northern city limits.
The effort comes only weeks after a boat carrying over 60 migrants capsized off the coast of Tripoli, Lebanon’s second-largest city and one of the poorest in the country, on April 23.
In the incident, seven bodies were discovered, with 47 people rescued and several still missing. Survivors at the time blamed the Lebanese navy for crashing into the refugees’ boat, triggering the catastrophe.
