The Israeli government has failed to adopt a law that would renew and protect the legal status of illegal Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, a major setback for the weak coalition that threatens to collapse.

The failure to renew the bill on Monday emphasized the disparities in the legal systems in the occupied West Bank, where over 500,000 Israeli settlers benefit from Israeli citizenship and law, while around three million Palestinians live under military rule that is now in its sixth decade.

For Palestinians, the situation in the occupied territories amounts to apartheid, according to three renowned human rights organizations.

The coalition of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett remains in power, but the vote exposed the alliance’s flaws and fractures, raising questions about how long it can last.
