On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian is traveling to Russia for a meeting with his Russian counterpart to discuss the Vienna nuclear talks and the situation in crisis-stricken Ukraine.
In his weekly briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh stated that Amir-Abdollahian will travel to Moscow with a “specific agenda” to discuss the developments in Vienna, without elaborating.
Attributed to “external factors” by the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, the eighth round of marathon talks in the Austrian capital was suspended on Friday.
Many suggest that fresh demands from Russia have complicated the process and forced the negotiators to temporarily head back to their respective capitals.
Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asked for a “written guarantee” from the US that sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would not affect its trade cooperation with Iran.
Russia’s demand for a written guarantee from the US must be discussed in the joint commission of the JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, Khatibzadeh said.
From day one, Khatibzadeh said that all JCPOA signatories have presented their respective demands to the joint commission, some of which were accepted while others have either been rejected or amended.
While commending the stance of Moscow and Beijing in the Vienna talks as “constructive,” the spokesperson has also said that Russia has committed not to obstruct a good agreement in Vienna.
