21 Iraqi officials hit with arrest warrants last month for corruption charges

On Wednesday, the Iraqi Integrity Commission stated that 21 arrest warrants were issued by Iraqi authorities for high-ranking state officials over corruption charges.

77 other officials were summoned as part of investigations into corruption accusations, the same statement made by the Iraqi body expressed.

Without giving any specific names, the statement said the list includes a current minister and former members of parliament.

According to the Transparency International index released in the past years, Iraq is among the most corrupt countries in the world.

Since October 2019, the country has been rocked by street protests against corruption and poor living conditions observed.

Since 2003, $150 billion had been smuggled outside Iraq, Iraqi President Barham Salih said last year.
