According to the Egyptian military on Saturday, at least 11 soldiers were killed in a militant attack in the country’s Sinai Peninsula.

Militants attacked a water pumping station west of Sinai, according to a statement by a military spokesperson.

Five other troops were injured in the attack.

Army forces clashed with the militants and surrounded them in an isolated area in Sinai, the statement added, while not providing further details.

Led mainly by the local branch of the Daesh/ISIS terror group, the Egyptian army has for years fought an insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula.
